Rachel Bettens
Joint founder of St Piran's Stud.
I started riding at 6 years old when Mum and Dad took the brave step and moved from
Coventry to Cornwall. As a kid I did all the normal horse things; went to gymkhana's,
camped at the stables over summer holiday - anything to keep me near the horses.
I bought my first partbred Spanish horse in my twenties and there started my passion
for the breed. In 2001 husband Paul and I started St Piran's Stud on his family farm at
Perranuthnoe, and over the last eight years my journey into classical training has been
guided by Peter Maddison-Greenwell, international dressage trainer and director of El
Caballo de España.
Last year I was thrilled to be accepted as an approved El Caballo de España trainer. I
currently ride and train horses to the upper end of medium advanced level. My journey
as a rider and trainer continues on, and during 2009 I have been learning the initial
training stages of piaffe, flying changes and pirouette. Bierzo, my horse and training
partner has taken me through the entire journey of our training, a very special horse. I
hold an Adult & Further Education Training Certificate along with my NVQ assessor
award.
My chief role at the stud is that of trainer for our horses, clients and their horses. In
addition I am responsible for all of the website, forum and blogging work and we now
have three sites that I maintain

I develop all of the new courses held at the stud and share photography duties with
Paul. I am also responsible for all of the training and assessment of students at the
stud & with wear the Health & Safety hat for the Stud.
I combine the stud work with a full time role as Quality Control Manager for the
Pharmacy Department at Royal Cornwall Hospital and of course being a full time mum
to the best two kids in the world.
Life is hectic, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

maintenance and overall up keep - a massive job as the number of horses on site
blossom with each passing year.
Pauls' chief role is that of breeding program manager. Each year he selects the mare
and stallion combinations, is in charge of stallion management during covering, he
works very closely with the stud vets on all aspects of mare care, monitoring
pregnancies and of course the main hand during foaling.
Paul has trained with Yeguada Susaeta and takes up the branding iron each year to
brand the stud stock. He is also an exceptional photographer of horses and is
responsible for the vast majority of the stunning photographs featured on this site.
Paul runs the stud on a daily basis supervising the work of the studs student and work
experience students, but like Rachel has other work commitments and chefs for the
Waterside Meadery in Penzance, so if you are looking for a good meal when you are
down in Cornwall visit the Meadery.
